Tips for mastering DIY projects: A Complete DIY Toolkit guide

Everything You Need in your DIY Toolkit

The success of your DIY undertakings depends a lot on your creativity, but the tools you have matter just as much, as does your skill in using them. You can buy a ready to use tool box, but you can also create your own, and it’s an option I highly recommend. With that in mind, here are the tools that should be in your DIY toolkit the next time you begin a project. A good starter project could be creating a discrete display table for the back of your sofa the steps of which I outlined previously, here on My Mindful Home .

The Basics - Where To Start

The BBC listed the basic tools that every toolkit should have, and these include the following: 5 meter measuring tape, claw hammer, insulated pliers, a set of screwdrivers, junior hacksaw, Stanley knife, spirit level, small adjustable spanner, and electrical test screwdriver. Having them in your toolkit is a good start, as you can accomplish quite a handful of projects.

Power Tools - More advanced but Also Great Time Savers

Power tools are particularly useful in accomplishing tasks. However, you don’t need a lot of power tools; instead, you’ll need just the right ones, like a mitre saw, a nail gun, and a drill. A mitre saw will come in handy when you need to cut large pieces of wood. A nail gun, on the other hand, can help shave hours off your DIY project compared to manually hammering the nails in. And of course, a cordless combi-drill (and my favourite) is an absolute must-have, as you will need it for a variety of DIY projects, like the display table and the cedar fence I talked about in ‘How to Create a Floating Cedar Wood Slat Fence’ tutorial, this single tool will save a lot of time when doing any DIY project or building flat pack furniture. Then again, don’t settle for anything less than the finest quality power tools, even if they cost a little more. Investing in good, quality power tools is a necessity for DIY enthusiasts as they will last for a long time.

The Little Ones

Lastly, you will need a supply of nails and screws. Ideal Home pointed out in their article ‘The Essential Home Toolkit’that stocking up on screws is recommended as “there are an infinite number of jobs you might need them for”. Similarly, you will need to stock up on drill bits, as there is not one drill bit for every drilling job. In other words, you will need drill bits of various diameters for masonry, for wood, and for metal. An expansive collection of drill bits means you will likely have the one you need for every DIY project you are working on, ensuring good results every time. Just as important, using the right drill bit ensures the “health” of your drill. Screwfix features a variety of drill bits that are ideal for drilling into just about any material. One thing you must avoid using a drill bit that exceeds the maximum drilling capacity of your drill, because if you don’t it can damage your power tool. Given the importance of tools in the success of any DIY project, it is vital to keep them in good working condition.

Now, as you complete your DIY toolkit, one final reminder: spend a bit more to get the finest quality tools as they will yield good results every time and last a lifetime. A toolkit is an investment that will see you through many projects.
